Venum Challenger – BJJ Gi Review

At around $120, the Challenger could be aptly described as Venum’s “economy model” gi. This description, however, would not give due justice to the quality of a gi that the Challenger is. Its lightweight, single weave material, soft inner lining, reinforced stitching, and eye-catching patches make the Challenger a gi that is capable of performing alongside gis well out of its price range.

Though the single weave material is not as durable as the gold weave that Venum offers in the Absolute, it is certainly more maneuverable. This makes the Challenger a great choice for someone who is looking for a lighter, less-expensive version of the Absolute that is still equally attractive and reinforced.

Design/Aesthetics

It’s hard to say enough about the remarkable manner in which Venum is able to produce a head-turning gi without resorting to flashy and over-the-top designs. A branding patch can be found on the bottom of the right leg, and Venum’s spectacular, optical illusion logo is sewn into the left shoulder. On top of this, the words “jiu jitsu” are elaborately embroidered down the left leg and across the back of the gi.

All of these are patches are black, contrasting perfectly against the white gi.

Fit/Comfort

The lightweight, single weave material and soft inner lining make the Challenger an absolute joy to roll in. Reviewers have said that the thin, loose sleeves and pants are highly comfortable and cool on hot days, not restricting their movement in the least.

In order to aid in helping you find a gi that fits you perfectly, Venum has offered the Challenger in A1.5 and A2.5 sizes that are great for those whose body type would usually fall in between sizes

Nonetheless, several people have had issues with their gi shrinking considerably after multiple washings, which makes getting a Challenger that will continue to provide a good, comfortable fit still a tricky task.

Durability

Though not as durable as the gold weaved Absolute, the single weaved Challenger is still a gi that is heavily reinforced and built to last. With triple stitched reinforcements in all the typical stress areas such as the knees, shoulders, and armpits, the Challenger is remarkably strong and well-built for a single weaved gi of its price. Looking through reviews on Amazon and Venum’s website, there are no complaints to be found about the gi ripping or tearing, even after prolonged use.

Jacket

As mentioned, the jacket of this gi is made from single weaved, high-quality cotton and is also outfitted with a soft inner lining, making it truly one of the most comfortable jackets you will find, and with triple stitched reinforcements in the shoulders and armpits it is both comfortable and strong—a very attractive combination.

On top of all this, the design and patches of the Challenger jacket are a joy to behold, with Venum’s formidable logo on the shoulder and the artistic calligraphy across the back coming together to give the design a unique mix of aggression and eloquence.

Pants

Of the complaints found about the Challenger’s tendency to shrink, most reviews have said that the issue is most prominent in the pants. Despite this drawback, the pants of the Challenger are still an extremely soft, flexible, and well reinforced for a gi as affordable as the Challenger.

The only other complaint against them is that they are outfitted with a cloth drawstring rather than a rope one, but this is rather minor.

Conclusion

If you don’t want to spend a small fortune on a gi but are still looking for an option that will be a well-rounded mix of comfort, durability, and appearance, the Venum Challenger may just be the best option on the market.

In spite of the issue with shrinkage, the Challenger is still an extremely comfortable and maneuverable gi, and the half-size offerings help to counterbalance this issue by making it easier to select a size that is perfectly pinpointed to your height and weight.

All in all, this gi performs on a level that is nearly unheard of for a gi of its cost, making it an excellent choice for both newcomers and seasoned pros alike.
